| The Air Conditioning and
Refrigeration Program provides the fundamentals of installation, repair
and maintenance of equipment and accessory parts used for heating and air
conditioning. Instruction stresses mechanical skills, and the theory and
principles related to the operation of residential and commercial units.
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration students learn basic electricity as
it applies to the electrical power sources and circuits used in air
conditioning and refrigeration units. Various equipment and training
simulators are used to teach basic refrigeration repair and maintenance of
air conditioning/refrigeration units. Students will also learn to solder
and braze. Instruction includes design and fabrication of connecting
ducts, refrigerant lines, and electrical hook-ups to power sources. The
removal and/or replacement of parts is done by using acetylene torches,
electrical meters, testing equipment gauges and hand tools. Instruction is
also provided on air distribution, diagnosing unit breakdowns,
disassembling and reassembling systems and making adjustments to ensure
efficient operation. Students learn to read basic blueprints, wiring
diagrams, and schematics.
