Students in the Health Occupations Program explore a
variety of health professions to develop an awareness of job opportunities
in the field of health care. The students completing the nurse aide
training portion of the curriculum are eligible to take the Pennsylvania
Nurse Aide Certification Exam to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). The
students develop skills used in various health careers such as measuring
temperatures, pulse, blood pressure, first aid, CPR, infection control
procedures, physical care of a patient. The students will complete an
introduction to dental assisting duties and basic chairside procedures
during their time in the program. During the first year, the student
completes a community-based learning (CBL) experience. With CBL, the
student completes 25 hours of work in a health-related facility for better
awareness of a professional's duties in the field of their choice.
Senior students interested in becoming certified as nurse aides complete
80 hours of clinical experience at a local facility. Students who
successfully complete the program are qualified as an entry-level health
worker and have an excellent foundation to continue study in various
health care fields. The student must wear a white lab coat in every
class every day and for CBL. The State Test fee for nurse aides and
criminal background check fees are costs payable by the student.
